Paladin Advisor Group

Our Story

Mike and Toni Whaley spent years working in the financial services industry when they recognized a need for something different. Maryland educators and local employers deserved personalized, accessible financial guidance, not cookie-cutter solutions. In 2013, they founded Paladin Advisor Group as an independent financial services firm to meet that need.

What started as a commitment to serve the unique needs of Maryland's education community has grown into a comprehensive financial services practice with an emphasis in financial planning. We've built lasting relationships with educators, families, and business owners across the region, helping them navigate every financial milestone - from their first investment to the retirement they've worked for and the legacy they leave behind.

What Can You Expect?

We start by listening. Not to sell you something, but to understand what's actually going on in your life.

We explain things in plain language. If we use a term you don't know, we define it. If a strategy doesn't make sense for you, we say so and explain why.

We look at the whole picture. Your retirement accounts, taxes, insurance, and debt all interact. We help you coordinate them, so nothing falls through the cracks.

As a fiduciary, we're held to the highest standard in the industry. Your interests come first, legally and practically, in every recommendation we make.

Our Financial Planning Philosophy

Our financial planning philosophy is straightforward: expert guidance free from sales pressure, transparent fees, and a commitment to educating you so every decision serves your actual goals. We succeed when you do, which is why we've built our practice around three core principles that guide every client relationship:

Three interlocking gears, black outline on white background.

Comprehensive

We believe every investment should be made with intention and purpose. We look at your complete financial picture: cash flow, retirement planning, risk protection, tax strategy, and long-term goals - to help ensure every piece works together.

Education-Driven Guidance

We believe informed clients make better decisions. That's why we take time to explain the "why" behind every recommendation, empowering you to understand your financial strategy and feel confident in choosing your path forward.

Long-Term Partnership

Financial planning isn't a one-time event. As life changes through career transitions, family growth, business expansion, retirement, your financial plan should evolve too. We're committed to being your trusted partner through every stage, adapting your strategy as your goals shift.

A Dedicated Team With Decades of Experience

We've been serving Maryland for 35 years. We work with educators, families, business owners, and nonprofit leaders who want accessible, honest financial planning without sales pressure. Our experience spans real market cycles: the 2008 crisis, pandemic volatility, and everything between. That matters because we know what works when markets climb and what holds when they don't. Our team approach means you benefit from collective experience across different areas of financial planning, from tax strategy and pension optimization to business retirement plans and investment management. When your situation calls for specialized knowledge, you get it. That's the advantage of working with a firm rather than going it alone with a single financial advisor.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Paladin Advisor Group

  • Are our Financial Advisors and Financial Professionals fiduciaries?

Yes. We're legally and ethically obligated to act in your best interest at all times. This is the highest standard of care in the financial services industry, and it's non-negotiable for us.

  • What are your team's credentials and qualifications?

Our team holds the necessary industry licenses and maintains the required continuing education to stay current on regulations and industry changes. Beyond credentials, we bring over 35 years of collective experience navigating real market cycles and helping clients through major financial decisions. We believe practical experience matters as much as any designation.

  • Who do you typically work with?

We work with individuals and families navigating financial decisions, business owners and nonprofit leaders creating retirement plans that benefit both their teams and themselves, and Maryland educators and state employees. While we have deep experience and understanding with the pension systems and benefits coordination, our work extends well beyond that: comprehensive financial planning that covers tax strategy, investment management, estate planning, and wealth building. Whether you're just starting your career or approaching retirement, our hybrid compensation structure means we can work with you at any stage.

  • How is your firm compensated?

We use a hybrid compensation model designed to make professional financial planning accessible regardless of where you are financially. For clients just starting out or those who prefer project-based work, we offer fee-for-service arrangements where you pay directly for planning services. For clients with established assets, we work on an assets-under-management (AUM) fee basis. This structure eliminates commission-based conflicts while ensuring our advice is always aligned with your goals, not sales incentives.

  • Do you only serve Maryland residents?

We're based in Maryland and have deep experience and understanding with Maryland-specific financial considerations, particularly the MSRPS pension system for educators and state employee benefits. That said, we work with clients throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond through secure online platforms and remote meetings. Location doesn't limit who we can serve.

  • What makes Paladin different from other financial planning firms?

Here's what sets us apart: we've structured our firm to be genuinely accessible, not just to people who've already accumulated significant wealth. Our hybrid fee model means you can work with us whether you're establishing your first retirement account or managing a complex portfolio. We're independent which means we're not tied to a bank, insurance company, or proprietary products. Our recommendations are based solely on what works for you. And we've built deep experience and understanding  serving Maryland educators, which means we understand pension systems, benefits coordination, and the specific financial challenges public employees face. Most importantly, our approach prioritizes education over sales. We succeed when you understand your options and feel confident in your decisions, not when we close a transaction.

  • How long has Paladin Advisor Group been in business?

Paladin Advisor Group has been serving clients since 2013, with our team bringing over 35 years of combined experience in financial services.

  • What does "independent financial advisor" mean?

Independence means we're not owned by or pressured by a bank, insurance company, or large financial institution. While we partner with Plan Member as our broker-dealer for regulatory support and compliance oversight, we maintain complete freedom in the advice we provide and the strategies we recommend. We're not meeting sales quotas or pushing proprietary products. Your financial success is the only agenda driving our recommendations.
